Chapter 771: Are They Looking For Compensation?

The police asked me to identify myself and I told them I was a Mercenary who borrowed the Exo-Knight when they attacked.

Thankfully, they had the sense to verify my identity and I was considered as a Merc who jumped in to help and wasn’t treated as a threat anymore.

Yep, I was upgraded from a ’possible threat’ to a ’very suspicious individual’, yay...

I thought the police would demand that I leave the Exo-Knight but surprisingly, they told me to stay inside it and wait for the owners to return.

I think that they wanted me to remain inside just in case there were more Exo-Knights that these guys might have hacked and they hoped I would be able to deal with them.

So I was just stuck inside the Exo-Knight and waiting for the police to clear out the place to make sure there weren’t any more of these guys.

I did, however, manage to find out what these guys were after when I asked one of the officers about it.

Apparently, their goal really had been to steal the new generation Exo-Knights away.

One of the thieves had been quite talkative and basically revealed that they were hired by some other corporation that was hoping to get their hands on the new generation of Exo-Knights so that they could reverse engineer it and break the monopoly that Crusaders Inc. has on the market.

I wondered aloud why they couldn’t just purchase one and figure out themselves and Ries explained that the ones that would be sold to the market would definitely have their tech locked and that would prevent other companies from breaking it apart to reverse engineer them.

But for these Exo-Knights that they brought to the exhibition, it’s very possible that they were still prototypes and thus did not have the tech lock that would protect them from getting their secrets revealed.

Corporate espionage is scary...

"You don’t think that they are going to charge us for using their Exo-Knight, are they?" I asked, looking at Ries who had curled herself up in my lap.

"Nyaaa~ I don’t think they will, Boss~ You basically gave them free marketing after all~ In fact, they should be paying you, nyaa~" She purred as I stroked her head and rubbed her belly.

"That’s right, Daddy! If they dare to bully you, I’ll just eat them!" Renata added helpfully from the side where I was using a tentacle hand to pat her head as well.

Right... Thanks girls... That makes me feel better.

I watched as the police cuffed and collared the thieves to start leading them out of the exhibition hall.

Soon, another figure entered the exhibition hall and I instantly knew that she was most likely someone from Crusaders Inc given the fact that she was dressed completely differently than the police officers.

She had green hair and was wearing a black business suit and a pretty tight skirt which reminded me of Sophia and Sofiya.

The clearest difference was the fact that she had what looked like a green dragon tail swishing behind her and I could also see some bits of green dragon scales underneath her black stockings.

She looked around for a moment before she spotted the Exo-Knight I was currently piloting and immediately made a beeline towards me.

Her tiny figure waved up at me, "Hello!! Can we talk?"

I tapped on the button to activate the external speakers, "Sure thing. Should I exit the cockpit?"

"Oh! There’s no need! Just let me come up please!"

Eh? She still wants me to stay here?

Oh wait... Maybe she wants to discuss stuff with me and the cockpit is probably the most private space in here right now.

I turned off the speakers and opened up the cockpit doors before letting the rope descend to the ground, allowing her to grab a hold of it before she started reeling up towards the cockpit.

Renata had already merged herself back into my clothes but Ries remained in my lap, refusing to budge as she continued to purr while rubbing her face against my boobs.

The dragon girl appeared in front of the cockpit and she deftly stepped off the stirrup, her high heels clacking against the floor as the cockpit closed behind her.

"Hello!! I’m Theresa! Sales Executive from Crusaders Inc. The company responsible for making the tenth generation Exo-Knight you are piloting right now!"

"Hello," I greeted back with a nod. "Tera. Mercenary. I would shake your hand but I’m a little occupied right now, sorry."

"Oh, don’t worry! I am quite aware of how Maochattes behave when they are in love with a human! So no need to apologise!"

"I’m sorry but... Are you also a human or..."

Her tail flicks through the air behind her, "Ah! I’m not a Dragonling, I’m a human and I used mods to give myself the traits of a Dragonling! Sorry for not explaining that!"

So there is a race called Dragonlings that look like her... Good to know.

"Just asking... Am I in trouble?" I asked.

She shook her head, "Oh, no no! Not at all! Please don’t worry about that! This is actually the best outcome we could hope for! The police had already told us what those thieves were trying to do and we were made to know that if you hadn’t done what you did, our Exo-Knights would probably be in their hands right now and that could probably set us back another year before we could release our new generation of Exo-Knights to the market!"

I raised an eyebrow, "That serious?"

"Of course! If they had managed to steal these, they would definitely be trying to release their own Exo-Knights into the market and we would have to revamp our Exo-Knights to beat the competition instead! There’s no way we would risk releasing an inferior product!"

"I dunno, I thought you would be able to sue if someone else tried to do that or something."

"Not if they went ahead to release the tech to the public which would make it difficult for us to pinpoint who is the real culprit and give all the other companies cover since they could just change whatever was released into their own product and make them safe from our litigations!"

I’m not really sure how the law works here so I’ll just take her word for it.

"In that case... Any reason why you are looking for me?" I asked.

She pulled out her personal terminal and leaned forward, her face barely a few inches from mine while her eyes sparkled with excitement.

"Yes!! Please tell me what you think about the Exo-Knight?! Was it difficult to pilot?! How about its capabilities?! Are there any problems with it or areas of improvement?! How does it fare against the ninth generation Exo-Knights?!"

I was a little taken aback by her sudden switch and blinked at her for a few seconds before answering.

"Umm... I think it’s definitely a step up from the older generation... The controls for this doesn’t really allow me to fight effectively in close combat and I can definitely tell that it’s faster and stronger than the older generation."

Her fingers flew across the screen on her personal terminal as she recorded what I said down, "That’s perfect! I understand you have an Exo-Knight pilot license as well right? Which models have you piloted before?!"

"Umm... I only just got my license like a week ago actually... So I only piloted a ninth generation Paladin model during my time at the school to get my license."

She blinked at me before she suddenly tapped on her personal terminal again.

This time, a screen appeared in front of me and I quickly realised that it was a camera recording of the Exo-Knight’s external cameras.

My heart dropped when I realised there was also an internal camera that showed the cockpit and there was a very obvious set of words in the top corner that said ’Audio: On’.

Theresa fast forwarded the recording to the moment the AI controlled Exo-Knights started breaking down the walls and then started the playback at a faster speed.

You could even see me going up to the wall and attaching something to the box which melted the wall away.

I think that was fine since I could just claim I had some secret tool that allowed me to do that.

Then I clearly hacked the Exo-Knight as the cockpit doors opened and I ascended up to the pilot’s seat with Ries.

But as soon as I took a seat on the pilot’s seat, the internal cameras were shut off and the indicator for the audio turned to ’Off’.

Renata... I am going to give you all the honey you want later.

Theresa didn’t even seem surprised by this and just concentrated on watching the external cameras where I fought with the other Exo-Knights, saying nothing as she watched the playback of me wrecking the other Exo-Knights.

When I finished off the last Exo-Knight, she turned to me and raised a finger, "I need to make some calls, Miss Tera... Please give me a moment..."

Am I in trouble after all?
