Chapter 47: Morning Tensions

The sun peeked through the curtains, waking Delphinia from her not-so-great night of sleep. She blinked a few times, her vision adjusting, before realizing exactly where she was.

Evander’s room.

Her body tensed as if shocked by electricity. She slowly turned her head and found him still asleep, the blanket rising and falling in rhythm with his steady breathing. There he was, sleeping like a baby, totally unaware of how much he’d messed with her head.

She stared for a moment, debating if she could tiptoe out without waking him. Deciding not to take any chances, she swung her legs over the edge of the bed as carefully as possible. Her feet hit the cool floor, and she froze, glancing back at Evander. He didn’t stir. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

Good.

She stood, smoothing down her clothes, and hurried to the door with all the urgency of someone escaping a crime scene. Only when she was safely out in the hallway did she release a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding.

Her heart was racing, and she pressed a hand to her chest as if to calm it. "Not good for my health," she muttered under her breath, heading toward her room.

As Delphinia walked down the hallway, her thoughts spiraled. How am I supposed to get through the day if it’s going to start like this? she groaned to herself. Her heart was still racing, and she felt like she’d just run a marathon.

Once inside, she practically sprinted to the bathroom. The cool water from the shower was a welcome relief, washing away not just the sleepiness but the lingering embarrassment from the night before. Sharing a bed with Evander? What on earth had she been thinking?

After pulling on a simple blouse and comfortable jeans, Delphinia made her way downstairs. The house was quiet, the kind of peaceful calm that made her think she was the only one awake.

She headed straight for the kitchen, her focus narrowing in on one goal: coffee. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee greeted her as she poured herself a steaming cup. She took a long sip, sighing as the warmth spread through her.

But even the coffee couldn’t hide her exhaustion. Truth be told, she hadn’t slept well at all. She kept waking up every hour, making sure there was still enough distance between her and Evander. The thought of being too close to him had her on edge all night.

The sound of soft footsteps broke her train of thought. Ashton appeared in the doorway, his hair slightly messy but his smile as bright as ever. "Good morning."

"Morning," Delphinia replied, trying (and failing) to hide a huge yawn.

Ashton frowned, pulling out a chair and sitting across from her. "You look sleepy."

"I am sleepy," she admitted with a chuckle, taking another sip of coffee.

"Didn’t get enough sleep?" Ashton asked, tilting his head curiously.

Delphinia hesitated for a moment, her lips curving into a faint smile. "Something like that," she said vaguely, unwilling to dive into the truth. What was she supposed to say? That she had shared a bed with his father last night and couldn’t get a good sleep because of it? Her mind wouldn’t shut up, spinning wild theories about what Evander might really be up to. No, absolutely not.

Ashton didn’t press further, instead changing the subject. That was fine. If he wasn’t going to do it, she’d take care of it herself. "Goldie slept well," he said with a grin, referring to the stray dog Delphinia had recently rescued.

Her smile widened. "That’s good to hear. Have you decided on a name for him yet?"

Ashton shook his head, resting his chin in his hand. "Not yet. I want it to be perfect."

Delphinia leaned forward, propping her elbows on the table. "What about Dollar?"

Ashton blinked, clearly caught off guard. "Dollar?"

"Yeah," Delphinia said. Looking at how great things are for him now, it kinda fits.

Ashton’s lips twitched, and he repeated the name under his breath. "Dollar... Dollar..." He sat up straighter, a smile breaking across his face. "You know what? I kind of like it!"

Delphinia beamed, taking another sip of her coffee. "Glad I could help."

Their chat came to an abrupt stop when heavy footsteps started getting closer. She already knew who it was.

Evander walked in like he owned the place, his damp hair and simple outfit making him look unfairly good. "Good morning," he said, his voice smooth as he slid into the seat at the head of the table like it was second nature.

Delphinia’s mood soured instantly. She glared at him, her fingers tightening around her coffee cup. How could he look so relax after last night? How could he eat breakfast like nothing had happened, like he hadn’t ruined her entire night?

Evander seemed to sense her irritation because he glanced at her, the corners of his mouth quirking into a knowing smirk. That smirk. The one that made her blood boil and her heart stutter all at once.

She scowled, wishing for nothing more than for him to choke on his food. Her glare intensified as he calmly buttered a slice of toast, completely unbothered by her silent fury.

"Careful, Delphinia," he said without looking up. "If you keep glaring at me like that, you might give yourself wrinkles."

Her jaw dropped. "Excuse me?"

Evander finally met her gaze, his smirk widening. "Just a friendly observation."

Delphinia’s face turned red with a mix of embarrassment and rage. "Friendly? You’re the furthest thing from friendly, Evander."

Ashton looked between them, clearly amused but wisely choosing to stay out of it.

Evander simply shrugged, taking a bite of his toast. "Suit yourself."

She let out a frustrated breath, arms folded tight, though she couldn’t stop staring at how perfect the sunlight made him look.

Knock it off, she scolded herself. But her heart didn’t listen.

Even after standing to clear the table, she was just as confused about Evander as before.
