Chapter 94: An Engagement Declaration

When Brooke woke up, she gasped, realizing that her head was rested on top of Thane’s arm, using it as a pillow.

Immediately, she sat up straight and tried to discreetly get out of bed, hoping not to wake him up. Unfortunately, her escape plan was thwarted when Thane spoke up.

"Good morning to you too." He said from behind her.

Brooke sharply looked over her shoulder to see Thane smiling at her. "Mr Grayson this is..." she scratched the back of her head, heavily embarrassed. Last night’s actions came flooding her memories, causing her face to flush bright pink.

"I am so sorry! This won’t happen again-" she was in the middle of apologizing when Thane’s phone rang from the dresser next to the bed.

Brooke reached for hers on the dresser on her side, and used it to maneuver her wheelchair over to her. She immediately got on it, avoiding Thane’s gaze the entire time.

"I’m going to wash up now, I’ll see you at breakfast?" She nervously asked, pushing back her wild strands of hair.

Not waiting for his response, she wheeled herself over to the bathroom and shut the door behind her.

She dashed for the sink, using it’s water to splash on her face repeatedly, in a bid to wash off the embarrassment.

"Brooke you idiot!" She cringed, "Why the hell are you always so dramatic?" She stared at her reflection, at the flushed face that couldn’t stop smiling.

She wanted to be angry she did that and feel more guilty, but she just couldn’t find it within her to do that.

To avoid seeing Thane, she used up nearly two hours in the bathroom, and spent another thirty minutes picking out what to wear to breakfast.

"Brooke calm down, you’re only having breakfast, it’s nothing special." She chanted to herself as the elevator descended to the grand floor.

As the elevator doors parted, she straightened her hair one last time and used her phone as a mirror to check if she looked good.

"Alright, let’s do-" her words were cut short when she heard a familiar voice downstairs.

She quickly wheeled herself towards the source, her mind trying to convince her that she was wrong, and it couldn’t be. But, her reality was once again thrown into confusion, when she caught sight of Tara, standing next to Matthew.

"What?" She gasped, wondering what Tara was doing back at Thane’s house.

Unfortunately, Matthew caught sight of her and let out a loud hiss, "So it’s this vegetable you want to marry?!" He raised his voice, pointing aggressively at her.

Upon being spotted, she immediately turned to retreat, but that plan was thwarted by the sound of a harsh blow connecting to someone’s face. She looked over her shoulder to see Matthew on one knee, and Thane towering over him.

"Thane! Stop it! He’s your brother, please don’t fight!" Tara cried out, standing in-between the two.

Matthew held onto the side of his face, shock drawn incredulously over his features. "Thane...you hit me?" He asked in disbelief, "Even father has never hit me."

Thane folded the sleeves of his shirt and started to look around him, prepared to do more than just hit his brother.

Tara sensing this, derailed the conversation towards Brooke, "What the hell is wrong with this woman? Thane, why haven’t you told her about our engagement?" She announced.

Brooke widened her eyes, "Engagement?" She echoed in a broken tone.

Thane ignored Tara and approached Brooke, "Brooke, it isn’t what you’re thinking-" he was saying, but Tara interjected.

"Your grandfather would think otherwise. We are engaged, or rather we will be, if you want to remain the heir to your family’s wealth." Tara said with a wicked grin. frёeωebɳovel.com

Matthew got on his feet, "I’ll let this slide," he said, while massaging the swelling on his face, "Only because it’s your engagement soon, but brother I won’t let you off the hook the next time." He threatened, trying to keep face.

Thane ignored them both and kept his gaze on Brooke, "Brooke?" He reached out for her hand, "Come with me, please." His tone went low and tender, and his gaze softened.

She stared at his hand, then at the menacing look from Tara behind him. It looked like the situation with Cassie and Ethan all over again. She bit her lip, she didn’t want to get hurt, she didn’t want to be deceived again and made a total fool of.

’No,’ she shook her head and took his hand, she gave him a reassuring nod, ’Things are different now, I’m no longer afraid.’ she thought steeling her resolve.

Thane who was stunned she was able to trust him, couldn’t help the half smile that crept onto his face. "Come with me." He gently said, then began pushing her wheelchair towards the elevator.

"Thane! Come back here! I’m your fiance-" Tara went after him, but was interjected by Hannah, who stood in front of her with a smile plastered on her face.

"You? Where did you come from?" Tara scoffed, then tried to get past her, by Hannah stubbornly blocked her path.

"What the hell? Get out of-"

"I’m sorry, but I can’t allow an outsider to step into the house any further." She declared.

Tara scoffed, "Didn’t you hear what I said? I’m going to be married to Thane soon, and this house will become mine. And you will become my servant too." She said, resting her hand on Hannah’s shoulder.

Hannah laughed as she peeled the woman’s hand, dusting off her touch she replied with a polite grin, "Over my dead body."

"You bitch!" Tara raised her hand to slap Hannah, but she was stopped by Matthew?

"Matthew what are you doing?" She asked, struggling with his hand wrapped around her wrist.

Matthew sighed, "Just go for now, I’ll call you when you need to be here. Right now, Thane won’t listen if you keep being aggressive." He said, then let go of her.

Tara looked at him impossibly, she tried to say something, but Matthew shot her a harsh glare, leaving her helpless. She took one last glance at Hannah, and narrowed her eyes at the ’servant’ who dared to speak back to her.

"I’ll deal with you later." She said, then dashed out angrily.

Hannah rolled her eyes and turned to leave, but Matthew held her by the wrist, "Hannah wait, I didn’t mean to-"

Hannah smacked his hand off hers and sent him a nasty glare, "Don’t touch me ever!" She spat at him, then walked off angrily.
