Chapter 95: Don’t Go Falling For Me, Okay?

Thane closed the door after Brooke, and tried to help her to the bed, but she refused his help.

"Mr Grayson, what is going on? Are you really engaged to her?" She asked.

Thane sighed, "No, she’s delusional, and Matthew is nothing but a fucking bastard." He hardened his tone, stunning Brooke that he could speak in such a manner.

’That’s quite hot.’ she couldn’t help but think that there were sides to Thane that she was unaware of.

"Then, if you’re not engaged to her, then why is she back here claiming you are?" Brooke delicately asked, although she sounded calm her heart was racing.

Thane pinched his temples, "She’s the granddaughter of one of my grandfather’s friends. And mother has been trying to set me up with just about anyone to please the head of the family." He confessed.

"So you’re saying that you’ve worked with a woman your family’s been trying to set you up with for years? And you didn’t think that was in some manner leading her on?" Brooke asked, surprising herself with her audacity.

’What is this anger burning in my chest? Why can’t I stand any of what’s happening?’ she thought, picturing the sinister look on Tara’s face from downstairs.

Thane crouched down in front of Brooke, he reached for her hand but she slowly retracted it. She heaved a heavy sigh and kept her gaze low, avoiding his. "I know I have no right to question your choices, but I just don’t want to get hurt again."

Brooke pictured the day she found out that Cassie was pregnant for her husband, the hurt from that day had etched a deep wound in her heart.

He stood up, "I understand, but at the same time Brooke, I wish you would exercise a bit more faith in me. Tara is nothing more than someone the family has been forcing on me for the longest time. And I have always been transparent of my intentions towards her. I would have fired her long ago, had grandfather not insisted I keep her around." novelbuddy.cσ๓

Pinching her skirt, she slowly raised her head, "Then why did you fire her? If it would make your grandfather upset, why did you-"

"Because she crossed a line with you. That’s how much I care about you, about our relationship. And even now, I’m not going to allow her or Matthew lay a finger on you." He hardened his tone, and balled his fists.

Her ears flushed, did someone like her really deserve any of this?

And why did she feel like Thane might actually...

Brooke sighed, "What does she want from you? It’s obvious you have no interest in her, what is she trying to achieve?"

"She’s teamed up with Matthew, and they’re both trying to force me into this engagement. She’s threatened that if I do not wed her, she’ll make the family aware of my relationship with you." Thane responded.

Sheepishly, Brooke asked, "I don’t understand, is there a problem with them knowing?"

Thane reclined against the kitchen counter and folded his arms, "I don’t want to expose you to them, at least not now, not while you’re at a very important part of your life."

Brooke frowned as she wheeled herself over to Thane. She tugged on his sleeve, demanding he look at her.

"Mr Grayson, allow me to say this. I know my shortcomings, and I’m trying to improve on them. But I’m not so helpless I can’t help you when you need me!" She raised her voice, making sure her point got across.

"That’s not what I’m saying-"

"But it sounds like what you’re saying. I know I’m not rich, smart or beautiful, but if you’re my partner, I want to help you too. I can’t be the only one on the receiving end. So tell me, what it is you want me to do." She softened her gaze and intertwined their fingers.

"Please, Mr Grayson."

Thane stared at their handhold and lifted the corners of his lips into an amused smile. He leaned in and planted a kiss on the back of her hand.

Brooke’s face flushed, "Mr Grayson-"

"Let’s get married...today." He proposed, leaving Brooke stunned out of her mind.

"Married? Today?" She echoed.

He tightened the handhold, and reached into his phone. "The family can’t do a single thing if I’m already married, and if I can help it, I’d much rather be with you than with anyone else for the rest of my life."

Brooke could only nod through what he said, she was too flustered to muster the courage to respond.

When Thane and Brooke left, Hannah stayed back to finish her freelance work. Since seeing Matthew, she felt irritated and didn’t want to see anyone. She drowned herself in work, without eating a single morsel of food. Eventually, she ended up falling asleep on her computer, with the lights left on.

For over an hour she slept soundly, until she felt a certain warmth radiate over her body. She sharply raised her head and looked over her shoulders, only to see Gilbert standing by the door, holding the air conditioning remote.

"It was awfully cold in here." Gilbert said in his defense.

Hannah parted her lips to say something, but was interrupted by the scent of coffee hitting her nose. She averted her gaze to the cup of hot coffee placed on her desk, next to a plate of neatly wrapped dinner.

Gilbert fake coughed, "Ahem, I heard from the maids you’ve been in this room for hours. I didn’t want miss Brooke to get worried over your health. And as a caretaker, you should be more meticulous about the state of your health-"

As he bagged, the warmth from the blanket on her shoulders made her smile from ear to ear.

"Old man," She called out to him.

Gilbert passed her a glare, "You know, you’re not that much younger..."

She cut him off with a wink, "Don’t go falling for me, okay? I’m too much for you to handle."

Gilbert covered his ears, "Don’t count on it." He sharply replied then dashed out of her room.
