Chapter 96: A Marriage Certificate

*Registry*

Brooke stared at the marriage certificate in her hand in complete and utter awe. Although Ethan was a shitty husband, he at least had the deceny to throw her a staple wedding, although it was strictly family and a select few of his friends.

But, with Mr Grayson, the process happened in less than an hour, and with just Gilbert and Sadie as witnesses to it.

There was nothing grand, but yet, she felt strangely happy about it.

She neatly folded the certificate into her bag when Sadie approached the car. Her thumb fell to the ring on her finger, the one Thane had surprised her with during the ceremony.

"Brooke, what the hell is happening here? Who gets married on a random Tuesday?" she asked in low toned whispers.

Realizing how strangely she worded her sentence she rephrased, "I mean...is there something you’re not saying? Considering how wealthy he is, and how in love you two are, I figured you’d have a more..." she rolled her tongue around her mouth, trying to find the right words.

"Memorable wedding." She filled in.

Brooke scratched the side of her face, her eyes closed into a full smile, "It’s fine, I’m really happy."

"But what about your family? I didn’t see anyone around-" her words were fortunately cut short by Gilbert, who came along to escort Sadie back to her apartment.

"Miss, I’m here to drive you back, Master Grayson believes that you should lay low until everything surrounding you dies down." Gilbert announced, gesturing her towards the awaiting car behind Brooke’s.

Sadie looked to Brooke, "Are you sure you’re okay?"

Brooke nodded, "I’ve never been better."

Content, Sadie congratulated her once more before going ahead with Gilbert. Shortly after, Thane arrived, with his phone to his ear. He got into the backseat with Brooke.

"Mr Grayson-" midway, she stopped herself from speaking when Thane leaned in and planted a kiss on her forehead.

"Yes, continue." He said, failing to clarify if he was speaking to Brooke or the person on the phone.

She widened her eyes, wondering why he just kissed her all of a sudden.

Too stunned to speak, she waited for the call to end, which wasn’t for very long, barely a minute after he disconnected the call and turned his attention to Brooke.

"Who was that?" She asked, fondling the diamond sitting on her finger.

"My mother."

Brooke’s nervousness shot up. She sat up straight and pushed her hair back, acting as though the woman were in the car with her.

"W-What did she say?" Brooke asked.

"She threatened to tear the city apart if I didn’t return home in time for father’s birthday dinner." he responded, signalling the driver to drive off.

"Well, when is the dinner? If you start packing now, you can arrive maybe some days before it..."

Thane chimed, "It starts in four hours."

"What?!" Brooke spat out, she could hardly imagine not being present for any of Luther’s events, even if it was as a worker in his agency. He, alongside Cassie had this weird obsession with her being at all their major events.

"You can’t possibly make it! Isn’t he out of the country? I don’t think there are any flights available right now." She said taking out her phone to check the flight schedules.

"Brooke," he called out in a low tone, "I’ve never been on a plane before."

She blinked twice, "Never been on a plane before? Then how do you..." she stopped herself from speaking, once the realization kicked in.

Her cheeks flushed at her mistake, "Right, I forgot you don’t really mix with us common folk."

Thane looked at her. "Do you think that’s why I’ve never been on a plane? Because of my status?"

"Am I wrong?" She got the feeling that he was trying to insinuate something, but Thane shut her down by changing the topic altogether.

"Father throws a lavish birthday every year with a sea of guests, my presence will not be missed. Not to mention that the filal son is already on his way, let’s leave the boot licking to him." he said.

Brooke frowned. "Mr Grayson-"

"And besides, Tara will be there trying to curry favor with my mother. I don’t have the patience for either of them." He went on.

"Mr Grayson-"

"Trust me Brooke, it’s a monotonous cycle of greeting and gossiping. You’d be bored of it and seeking for an escape route..."

Brooke cut off his rambling by reaching for his hand and intertwining his with hers. She looked him in the eye, her thumb gently caressing the back of his palm.

"It’ll be fine."

Thane sighed, "It won’t, Brooke."

"Well, maybe you’re right, but still, I think you should go see your father, if your mother called it must be important." She reasoned.

"Or, the family needs to be entertained. You’d be surprised how lightly they take me." He said.

"It sounds like you’re running away." Brooke retorted.

"And it sounds like you don’t know anything they’re like." He replied.

She huffed, "That’s because I don’t. But I just feel-"

"I want you to trust me on this Brooke, those people do not care about me." He argued.

A groan escaped her lips, "Trust me, I know all about a family that doesn’t care."

"Then you should know why I avoid them." He sharply responded.

"I don’t want you to run from your problems. You’ve taught me that I can fight back, that’s why I admire you so much. So if I can help it, I want to protect you too." She pointed out, placing her foot down on the matter.

Thane parted his lips to speak but instead found himself grinning from ear to ear.

"What?" Brooke asked sharply.

"Don’t you think it funny that we have our first real disagreement right after our wedding?" He pointed out, his gaze leveled on their interlocked hands.

Brooke followed his gaze and laughed gently at the fact that even though they weren’t on the same page, they never stopped holding each other’s hand.

And oddly enough, arguing with Thane reminded her of something from her past.

No, someone from her past.

Looking at Thane she furrowed her brows. ’Could he really be him?’
