Mated To My Stepbrother-Chapter 27
*Margret’s POV*
I remained on the spot Jaxon left me, pondering at the same time wondering. He said he had mixed feelings about this place and the serious tone with which he said it,struck a chord of fear in my heart. I’ve known Jaxon to be an headstrong person but the fact that he appeared disconcerted when he made that statement made me feel uneasy. The camp wasn’t an harmful place to be and the people we’ve met so far are friendly but.. Maybe we should have just stayed at home,we would be preparing dinner together now.
"Where have you been Aria", Mary asked me as she saw me approaching the camping field, "Tim and Calum have gone with Stevie’s dad to gather woods for the bonfire"
"Nothing" I muttered, proceeding to fix the tent I and Jaxon would pass the night in. "You don’t look like everything is okay" Mary pressed further, "has your erratic boyfriend started again?"
I sensed mockery in her tone and anger welled up in my heart immediately, making Mary’s oval face irritate me as she turned to face me. How dare she call Jaxon erratic when she’d been associating with a pervert? I felt a deep urge to call her out and ask her what she meant but because of the mixed feelings Jaxon claimed to have about the camping trip,I decided not to start a drama and continued fixing the tent.
If Mary had sensed my irritation towards her, she didn’t say anything about it. It lingered between us like a thick fog, unspoken yet palpable while I continued to relive the scenes of the moments Jaxon and I had before we arrived at the camp house.
*Jaxon’s POV*
Timothy Andros does nothing but make me angry and it’s getting harder for me to continue tolerating him. I just want grab him and ram my fist into his puffy cheeks. I just want to break all his teeth or all his bones! Just iAriaine I was peacefully enjoying with Aria before his stupid call came in and my poor Aria was too guiless to suspect that it was a trick to get her to hangout with him. Yes, Timothy Andros organized this sham camping trip so that he would be able to spend time with my angel girl. I know Aria wouldn’t believe me if I told her this but it was still my fault that I agreed for us to come here.
"Jeez", I muttered under my breath as I plopped down on one of the rocks on the bank of a small lake I had stumbled upon. I didn’t even know how long I had been walking. I took a deep breath and leaned forward to examine my reflection in the river. The silvery surface of the lake mirrored my weary face the way I expected it to and I closed my eyes to rest my nerves and to take a deep breath.
After I opened my eyes,I gazed at my reflection in the river again but what I saw in the river shocked me so much that I screamed out and jumped off the rock.
"What are you doing here?" I growled as I turned to face the intruding figure, "have you been following me?"
She raised her shoulders in a small shrug and took a step closer towards me
"I heard you arguing with your girlfriend and when I saw storming away in anger I feared that you might get lost in the woods so I decided to..."
"To stalk me?"
"No!" She forced a quirky smile, "I meant I decided to follow you", and she started shifting from foot to foot .
"You acted like a creep back there"
"I’m sorry" she muttered and she looked away from me "I’m just concerned for you" she gestured to the rock I stood up from
"No" I said, dusting the dirt off the back of my trouser, I suddenly wasn’t feeling comfortable anymore "I have to return to the camp site, Aria would have been worrying about me"
"Okay" she said hesitantly as she moved out of the way, something flashed in her green eyes but I didn’t have the name for it and I didn’t care.
"Your name is Stevie right?"
"Yes" she replied and I moved to walk past her
"Do you know the way back?"
"Uhh" I turned around instantly, "I meant do you know the way back to the campsite"
I paused and began to search my mind for the routes that led me to this place but it all came out blank. Turns out I was just walking,I was paying attention to the twist and turns.
"I’m not actually sure"
She flashed a small smile and started walking slowly on a tiny path beside the lake, "this is a shortcut, we’ll get home faster"
"Oh okay"
And the journey back home proceeded in silence until she asked me,"for how long have you and Aria been dating?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Nothing"she shrugged "I’m just curious"
"Well I’m sorry Stevie, I don’t wish to talk about it"
"It’s okay" she waved her left hand derisively but I could tell she wasn’t satisfied and that only thickened the fog of tension around us. We kept on walking without saying a word to each other and a part of me began to wonder how possible it was for her to know the forest like the back of her hand.
"I feel like I’ve seen you before Jaxon" she said, "you look somewhat familiar?"
"Well I don’t know you from anywhere" I could feel her embarrassment with the brusque tone I answered her questions with but I have lost the desire to flirt and sleep with random girls.
"You don’t know me from Instagram?" She paused and turned to face me, "I meant... I’m one of your active followers. I’m always commenting on your posts, reposting them and reacting"
"Ohh that’s nice..Thanks for following me Stevie but I don’t exactly know my followers by name both the active and the inactive ones"
The moment I said those words, Stevie stopped walking and tucked her hands into the pockets of the brown jogger pants she was wearing.
"Is something wrong?"
"Nothing Jaxon Gilbert", She answered and I sensed something ominous in her voice, "I shouldn’t help you return to the campsite since you don’t know who I am"
The blood in my veins dried up as I widened my eyes in surprise, "You don’t know me Jaxon, you don’t know your most active follower on Instagram. The one who opened multiple accounts to help you increase your followers, the one whose messages you never reply to"
A mischievous smirk crawled onto Stevie’s innocent looking face and as she began to move closer to me, my legs began to wobble beneath me.
"You can’t run away Jaxon Gilbert, you’re stuck in this forest with me, you can never find your way back alone. We were meant to be together,we were meant to die together"
Stevie flashed a mischievous smile at me as she slowly began to pull her right hand out of her pocket. A grey stilleto dagger accompanied her slim hands out of the pocket and my entire life flashed before my very eyes.
