Chapter 37: I want to form an alliance...

Selene POV

"Okay," I nodded holding a fistful of my dress in my hand as I stared at him.

"Let’s go then," he said.

The silence that hung in the car as we drove to the pack house was so uncomfortable that I was scared of breathing. From the corner of my eyes, I could see Noah’s jaw twitching at intervals.

It was as if he had a lot to say but was holding back. I knew he wasn’t happy with the decision and more than anyone, I knew he didn’t deserve this. Noah is a good man.

"You just need to say the word and I promise I won’t go through with it," I said breaking the silence.

"What?" he turned to look at me for a split second before concentrating on the road "Did you say something?’

"I said, we can look for other solutions instead of doing this. I feel guilty that...".

"But it was your idea," he interrupted me "You suggested it to Xavier, right? He told me so at least,".

"Yes," I sighed "I was just desperate for anything that would make us leave here for good. I’m not going back to Xavier, I know that for sure,".

"Don’t worry about me, Olivia," he says quietly "I’ll be fine. I’m just eager to go home and go back to my life,".

"And it won’t hurt you that I have to be with Xavier for three days? Anything can happen, Noah...".

"Hurt?" he scoffed "You’ve hurt me beyond repair Olivia and for some reason I still want you. It doesn’t matter now. I’ve made up my mind to just go with it and please can you stop talking about it already? You’re making it worse,".

For the rest of the journey, I hung my head in shame. When we arrived at the pack house, I saw Xavier leaning on a car parked in front of the pack house. Noah stopped the car and we both got out.

When Xavier saw us, his eyes narrowed suspiciously before they eased into a smile as he went straight to his uncle.

"Thank you for driving her here. Selene, are you ready to go now?" he turned to me.

"Yeah," I nodded as my gaze strayed to Noah who was already walking into the pack house.

I watched his retreating figure with guilt.

"C’mon, let’s go," Xavier nudged me gently.

I exhaled one last time before joining Xavier in the car.

"Are you alright?" he asked watching me.

"No," I shook my head "This is wrong, Xavier. What I am doing... what we’re doing to your uncle is wrong?"

Xavier arched his brow at me "What are you talking about? What are we doing to him? That should be my line, Selene. My uncle knew that you were my mate but he still went ahead to propose. What was he expecting?"

"I just feel guilty," I sighed. "Anyways, where are we going and what will we do when we get there?"

"We’re going to meet Alpha Kurtis no doubt and thereafter, we would head to the meeting arena for a brief meeting with Alphas from other packs. That will depend on also, the outcome of our meeting with Kurtis,".

"Okay," I nodded "Do you need me to do anything special when we get there?"

"Just be yourself and if there’s a need for you to speak, don’t hesitate,".

"Okay," I nodded and leaned back on the chair of the car.

The drive to Alpha Kurtis took some hours and had us driving to the outskirts of the pack. From afar, we spotted what seemed to be a garrison of soldiers on an open field with tents set up. There was even a checkpoint.

"Identify yourself," the soldier barked when we got to the checkpoint.

Xavier placed a possessive hand on my hand before wounding down the window of the driver’s seat, a cold expression on his face. For a minute, I stiffened as memories rushed back to me from the past. This was the Xavier I knew.

The soldier that had stopped us, reeled back and I saw fear flicker in his eyes. Xavier could make anyone cringe before him.

"W-Who are you?" the soldier stuttered.

"Alpha Xavier from Greyhound Pack. Kurtis is expecting me," he said.

"Oh!" the soldier quickly waved at those manning the checkpoint "It’s The Alpha from Greyhound, let him through," he shouted.

Immediately, the barricade opened and we drove through.

"Listen, Selene," Xavier said softly, his eyes darting around the place as we drove. I also noticed he was driving slower "If you check under your seat, there is a gun there and I know we might be frisked so don’t take it with you yet. After we go in and start talking, excuse yourself and come to the car for the gun. There’s a basket of gifts in the car too, you could come with it to douse suspicion,".

My body tensed "I thought this was going to be a friendly visit,".

"Yeah," he nodded "But you cannot predict, Kurtis and I don’t want anything to happen to you,".

"As long as we don’t rile him, everything would be fine. Just be polite,".

By this time, we’d arrived at a bigger camp tent and Xavier parked the car a few meters away from it. When we came down, he reached for my hand which I happily let him have it. Standing on both corners of the path that led to a tall man, sitting under a thatched hut were burly, fierce-looking soldiers.

My pulse raced as we approached the so-called Alpha Kurtis.

"Xavier," a rich baritone voice called out as we got to the hurt.

A surprised gasp escaped my lips as Alpha Kurtis came towards us, a pleasant smile on his face. I didn’t know what I was expecting but the blonde, blue-eyed, handsome man in front of me didn’t look like all the stories I’d heard.

His eyes were kind and he smelt nice too.

"And who is this?" Kurtis’s eyes settled on me.

"My wife and Luna," I heard Xavier say "Baby, say hi to him,".

I shook my head to clear my mind as I placed my hand daintily on his outstretched hand "It’s a pleasure to meet you, Alpha Kurtis,".

"Same here, Luna..." he turned to Xavier for the name but Xavier gave him a blank look making him chuckle as he placed a light kiss on the back of my hand "What will I do to know the name of the woman standing in front of me, Xavier?"

"Leave my wife alone, Kurtis," Xavier drew me closer to himself, draping a protective hand on my shoulders "Don’t you have a Luna yet?"

"Unlike you folks, I have no interest in staying committed to one woman for the rest of my life. Sounds boring to keep fucking one hole. So, no Luna for me,".

I shuddered at his choice of words surprised at how vulgar he sounded. He pointed towards a chair and asked us to sit then he took the seat opposite us.

"It’s such a surprise to see you, Xavier," Kurtis started "The rumours said you were useless... seemed they weren’t true,".

"It beats my imagination that someone as respectable as you would breach into my territory set up camp and leave as if you’re here on vacation. What is this, Kurtis? How much were you paid to come here,".

Kurtis’s brows deepened with a frown as he crossed his legs, an amused expression on his face. His gaze flickered to me, lingering for a minute. I couldn’t get over how handsome he was.

I had envisioned a short, burly man with tattoos who looked like a fugitive, but not this.

"Can you ask your woman to excuse us?" Kurtis said.

"No," Xavier replied coldly "She’s my wife, there are no secrets between us, so she stays,".

"Oh," Kurtis chuckled crossing his leg "I see you’re no longer fucking that blond bitch. The one you came with the other time,".

"Kurtis..." Xavier growled, his eyes flashing with annoyance "Don’t try me and answer my fucking question. Why are you here?"

"Relax, Xavier," Kurtis said staring at us calmly "And you might want to try and be a lot more truthful to me from now on. Let’s start with who’s the woman beside you?"

"It’s none of your fucking business, Kurtis. Tell me why you’re here...".

"Well," Kurtis shrugged "I was asked to come to kill you and take away what little power your pack holds. The Alphas of the region do not like you so much, Xavier. Your Beta fought with a lot of people when you were on your sabbatical leave,".

"And..." Xavier continued without batting an eyelid "Who else sent you?"

"Maybe the foxes," Kurtis said lazily "Like I said, for some reason everyone wants to have you dead and as much as I am a killer, I try to punish people who deserve it. To me, you’ve always been nice except when you killed one of my people but aside from that...you’ve been super nice. Helpful for the most part and I grew a conscience...".

"What are you talking about?" Xavier continued coldly, his gaze not leaving Kurtis even for a second.

"You think if I wanted to wipe your pack and everything that’s Greyhound... that I would have waited until this time? C’mon, Xavier... I don’t have a lot of time to sit around growing a conscience unless that thing is extremely important to me,".

"Your point?" Xavier narrowed his eyes at Kurtis.

"What I’m trying to say is, that I want to form an alliance with you, Alpha Xavier,".
