Chapter 76: Compromise

Wise spent the next thirty minutes forming a written contract with the dwarf.

Their deal was simple: he would pay for his weapon in full, as well as two of the weapons the girls were going to buy, then postpone payment for others till another time.

Since they would soon be official members of the adventurers’ guild, they could easily sell the monsters they would get from the ruins to the guild. That way, they could earn some money.

In addition to the sword, Torin handed him a bracelet made out of wooden beads that had strange runes engraved into them.

"What is this?"

Torin walked to the door, smiling widely due to how much money he had made in a single night, when he paused. "It is a paired deal with the sword, a spatial storage device."

Wise stared at it in the light. "Really? It looks so fragile..."

He had always wanted to get one, but the thought of it always skipped his mind.

A spatial storage was useful for many reasons, for one, if he had it he wouldn’t have had to mail his things to Domum.

"Thank you, I’ll be back with your payment soon," Wise said as they both left the room.

"Sure, don’t be late or I’ll have you pay double."

Wise slung the sun blade across his shoulders and went looking for the girls..

When he got there, he found Aofie alternating between two weapons and swinging them to see which one felt more comfortable.

He could see Torin’s concern, but the dwarf managed to hold it in.

"Oh, Wise, you’re back. What do you think?" She asked, lifting both weapons at her sides.

The first one was an odachi, a large blade that was almost as tall as her, while the second weapon was a halberd, each of them with gleaming runes carved into them.

The odachi was a great weapon that could reach enemies without having to get close, but the halberd was even better than it in that regard.

The only issue with the odachi was the weight of the weapon. Aofie was someone who’s fighting style focused on speed and agility, the odachi was the wrong choice.

After exposing his reasoning to her, Aofie placed the odachi back on the stand and spun the halberd once more.

"It looks like you’re coming with me!"

The others seemed to have made their decision long before Aofie. Behind her, was Esme who had a bow in one hand and a quiver on her back.

It was a sturdy looking golden bow with black highlights forming a swirly pattern on its sides, and its string was black and taut, a sign that it required considerable strength to pull.

As for Daphne, she had a sword Wise recognized at first glance. It was the rapier that he had eyes on when Torin took him to the farthest shelf.

—Night Slayer

An excellent choice, albeit on the pricey side.

Wise looked around before asking, "Where is Freya?"

Only the three girls were present while Freya was still somewhere in the shop.

Daphne pointed at the back. "She needed space to test something dangerous."

Wise cocked a brow. "Dangerous?"

He walked past them in the direction they had pointed, and they all followed him.

Once he got to the edge, he peeked over the edge of the shelf and saw Freya.

Her eyes were closed, and her hands were giving off a faint energy, but that was not what made them pause.

It was what was above her...

Floating above her head, twisting in the sky like a serpent was a troubling weapon, one that took a long time to master.

It had a long, dark purple chain that ended in a Scythe-like blade on one end, and a spiked ball at the other.

A Kusarigama.

Immediately Aofie saw her, she shouted: "Hey, that looks really cool!"

Startled by the sudden sound, Freya’s eyes shut open—

Whoosh!

The blade shot forward, cutting past Aofie and colliding against one of the shelves.

Aofie froze, smiling nervously as everyone glared at her.

"Sorry?"

***

Dark Forest, Skentic Ruins.

Blanketed in darkness, with only the light of the moon and the flames of their lanterns being their only source of light, a party of three were surrounded on all sides by several dreadful beasts.

They had wolf-like heads on humanoid bodies, with milky white eyes bearing no pupils. Their teeth were sharp and wicked, crossing canines that when locked could hardly be undone.

Their bodies were slim from malnutrition, and yet those slender fur coated limbs possessed enormous strength.

Scavenger demons.

Elias gritted his teeth. They were here on a commission, who knew they would run into demons?

"Focus, keep the formation tight!"

As the first demon lunged at him and Elias unsheathed his blade, a hero’s sword.

The sword came with a wave of golden light that blinded the demons.

In an instant, he was upon the scavenger, bringing his blade down in a sideways slash that ripped it from shoulder down to chest.

He turned around to help the rest of his party, only to see Sara wiping her dagger on the scavenger’s body and Jacob shaking gore off his gigantic shield.

"Let’s find what we came for, and get out of here before more show up. We don’t want to be surrounded by these guys."

Scavengers were weak on their own, but their strength was in their numbers, and they sometimes moved in packs no less than fifty.

"Okay boss!" Sara said, doing a jovial salute before walking towards him.

Elias sighed tiredly and began walking.

They proceeded into the forest quietly, trying to avoid drawing attention.

Multiple plants were blocking their way and Elias felt their leaves bruising against his face, and heard the quiet rustle each time they would touch his armour.

But then he paused.

The night was quiet, and save for their breathing and the rustling of Jacob’s foot against the grass there was silence.

But that silence was not one brought about by peace, but a stillness left in the wake of destruction.

"There is something ahead."

His senses were blaring at him, warning him to turn back. But a part of him was intent on moving forward, whatever it was, he could not leave something like this unchecked.

He was a hero, not a coward. If it was something they couldn’t handle then they would simply run for it.

That was what was running through his mind as they sneaked further, emerging into a small clearing.

"?!"

Elias sucked in a sharp breath at the sight in front of him.

There was a bleeding mountain of scavenger demons, numbering no less than seventy, a short distance away, bodies piled atop bodies.

And sitting next to that mountain, his legs crossed and his back relaxed on it, was a man in a black mask and strangely, a flat cap.

The man chuckled darkly.

"Hero, I’ve been waiting for you."
