Chapter 68: Jasmine

Inside an underground basement in Crystal City, there was a group of people with distressed expressions on their faces. Each and every one of them looked haggard, as they were all filled with a lot of stress.

They were the officials that were in charge of Crystal City. The governor, his assistant, and some of the top tycoons that were present in Crystal City and had managed to hide there, were all present.

"Governor, have you contacted the military to come over and rescue us? When are they going to arrive?" One of the people present asked. He was actually the richest man present in Crystal City.

"You have to be patient. I have already been informed that the catastrophe hasn’t struck just our crystal city, but the whole country, in fact, the whole continent has suffered. So, you will have to know that we are not the only people that need to be rescued." The governor, who was a middle-aged man with a bald head replied.

"They are currently rescuing others, completely ignoring about us. Doesn’t that mean that they don’t think that we are important enough to be rescued first? For heaven’s sake, Crystal City is an important city in the country. And as a result, many important people are present here!" A man with a pot belly exclaimed.

He was the second richest man present in Crystal City. Previously, he had gone out for a business trip, and when he came back, this happened. He couldn’t help but regret the fact that he had actually hurried over, just to get trapped here.

He was completely forgetting about the fact that, other than Crystal City, every other part of the world was actually encountering the same situation.

"That’s right! We have contributed a lot to the economy of the country. We have paid a lot of taxes that were utilized by the country to improve and fund several projects. But now, we are actually being ignored!" Another middle-aged man said.

"Gentlemen, please calm down. You have to understand that the military camp is a distance away, and even if they decide to come, they will have to take about 3 hours. Additionally, we are not the only people that they need to save." The governor tried to calm the crowd down.

If possible, he would have really given up on his position of the governor. It was just that, there was nothing that he could do, as he actually cared about the lives of every citizen of Crystal City.

That was the reason as to why he had ensured that the police that were available had saved as many people as possible, and brought them to the underground building. It was just that, these rich people did not want to be in the same place with people of the low class.

For that reason, the governor had no choice but to separate the two sides. Yet, there was another problem that they were encountering. That was the fact that, while they were underground, there was actually no food available for them.

This had already made many of them flustered, and they were now complaining, talking about unreasonable things.

"We have stayed here since yesterday at midnight or something. But, I am already feeling hungry, and I haven’t eaten anything." A fat guy complained. At this time, his face was already pale, as if he was suffering from some kind of sickness.

The governor went ahead and began trying to calm down everyone. It was only after he had told them that he was going to make arrangements for them to get food, that the group finally relaxed.

As for the governor, he went back to the area that his daughters and son were waiting for him. His wife was unlucky, and had already turned into a zombie.

Thankfully, they had all come to the underground building only after the zombie breakout. Otherwise, they would have perhaps been turned into zombies by now, had they come over any earlier than that.

"Dad, I am scared." A little girl of about 7 years in age said to the governor the moment that he arrived where they were seated.

"Don’t be afraid. I’m sure that the military will be here to rescue us." The governor went ahead and embraced his daughter, trying to calm her down.

"Dad, where do you think we can get some food? I’m so hungry." A young man in his early twenties frowned as he asked. Before the apocalypse, he was a hedonistic young master, and was used to spending the money that his father possessed.

As such, he possessed no skills, and during the apocalypse, he didn’t even begin thinking about the well-being of his father. Instead, he was actually asking him for food, when he knew that currently, it was very difficult to get food as on the surface, there were a lot of danger.

"Will you shut up already?!" A young lady frowned as she looked at the young man. She was the eldest daughter of the governor, and the young man’s elder brother.

"You are a man here, and you are actually waiting to be provided for. Can’t you see that father is already having a difficult time dealing with all these people here. And now, instead of even trying to help him, you are actually trying to increase the burden that he is suffering! How unreliable of you!" The lady was extremely angry at the behavior of the young man.

"What do you know? It is like I am the reason why the apocalypse came. What’s more, I am not the person who opened the underground basement for all these people to come in. So, why should I care about them?" The young man retorted.

"You...you! How can you be so selfish? Don’t tell me that you can actually survive alone in this world? You don’t work, you only know how to spend money. So, if they are no farmers present, what are you going to eat? If there are no butchers, what kind of meat are you going to eat?" The young lady was infuriated as she began pointing towards the young man.

If possible, she would have already slapped him up, but, considering the circumstance that they were in, there was nothing that she could do about it.

"Calm down already. I don’t want you guys to argue like this. Your mother is already gone, and I hope that we don’t get into a conflict. Our family has already suffered immense loss." The governor couldn’t continue watching his children arguing with each other. freewёbnoνel.com

"Humph! But..." The young man snorted and was just about to continue speaking when suddenly, he felt his sister’s piercing gaze. He immediately shut up, even though he was a man. He didn’t want to face his angry sister at all.

The governor on the other hand continued holding his younger daughter in his hands. He was trying to think of a way that they were going to use so as to get some food.

It was perhaps okay for the adults to stay hungry for a day or two. But, the children were different. Since they were still in their growing phase, they required a lot of food as their metabolic rates were high.

Other than that, they also needed water. They could stay without water for at most 3 days. The governor was sure that these rich people were not going to agree to stay here without water for a long time. They were definitely going to cause a lot of trouble not long from now.

At this moment, a policeman who was acting as a guard came over and whispered to him. "Mr. Governor, we have noticed that there is actually a group of people that is killing zombies out there. The monsters have retreated, and the only thing that we need to deal with will there be the zombies. I think that we can perhaps organize a team to go and look for food."

The governor thought about it. Even though he wasn’t willing to sacrifice his man to go out and look for food for others, there was no choice. After all, if people did not go and look for food, not only was chaos going to erupt in here, but even the children were going to suffer.

So, he nodded his head and said, "Arrange a group of 20 men. Let them go to a mall or something, where there’s food. It is just good that we are close to many malls that contain foods. Tell them to be careful when they are out."

"Yes." The man replied before leaving.

"Father, I am going out too." The governor’s eldest daughter got to her feet and said.

"No! I will not let that happen. We have already lost your mother, and there is no way that I’m going to put you at risk." The governor refused resolutely.

"But, there’s no difference at all. The people that we are sending out are being sent to danger. They also have their own families. Since we don’t want people to lose their hope in us, I think it is better if I go with them." The eldest daughter replied.

The governor took a deep breath and said, "If there is anyone that has to go, that would be me. After all, I represent the whole Crystal City."

"Father, that cannot happen. You are the only person that can actually speak with these people here. If you are not here, then there is nobody who’s going to control them." The eldest daughter said reasonably.

"What’s more, I have already awakened, and I’m not that weak." She continued.

The governor thought about it, and found that whatever his daughter had said was actually reasonable. Even though he really did not wish to send her out, there was actually no choice as there was supposed to be someone who went out together with the group.

Perhaps those people that were going out might be okay with it. But, what about their own families? They were definitely going to be angry about the matter.

"Jasmine, be careful when you are out." The governor took a deep breath and said.

"Yes father." Jasmine replied, before shifting her gaze towards her younger brother. But when she noticed that he didn’t even care about whether she was leaving or not, she could only shake her head in disappointment.

After that, she left, to join the group that was going out to look for food.
