Chapter 49: 49. Married But Not A Couple

Jael walked up the stairs with a grim expression, he was tired of the gathering and had to leave the dining hall. They were still partying, and he knew it would go on until after sunrise.

Jael stopped in front of her door, wondering if he should knock before he stepped in but he decided against it just in case she was asleep. He carefully turned the handle, making sure it didn't make a sound as he walked into the room.

Jael soundlessly locked the door and approached the windows, closing them with the curtains. The sun was rising, in a couple of minutes, he wouldn't have been able to do that without incident.

He walked toward the bed, Mauve laid on it with her eyes closed and her mouth partly opened. Her hair was in disarray and a couple strands of hair had found their way to her mouth.

Jael shook his head as he stared at her sleeping without a care in the world. He stretched out his hand to remove the hair. As soon as his hand touched her face, Mauve grabbed him and her eyes flew open.

Jael blinked at the sudden movement, he would have sworn she was asleep.

"What are you doing?" She asked, her voice sounding stern.

"Checking on someone stupid enough to take vampire wine," he said and tried to pull his hand out of her grip.

Mauve gasped, "Was there blood in it?"

Jael's eyes turned to slit. "No, we call that blood. Goodnight, good morning. Go to sleep." He tugged again but she wouldn't let him go.

"Your arm is cold."

"No, yours is just ridiculously warm," as he spoke her warmth was burning a hole through him.

"Are you cold?" She asked, looking up at him with big brown eyes.

Jael laughed, "No, Vampires don't get cold. Temperature change barely affects us."

"Hmm," she said but still wouldn't let go of his hand.

He tugged again, "Let me go."

"Why?" She asked.

Jael pinched the bridge of his nose. "Because," he started to say, pushing her hands downwards, "I would like to rest in the comfort of my bed."

She grabbed his second arm and said, "You can share mine."

Jael froze up and for a millisecond he did not know what to say. He pulled a little harder and his first hand slipped from her grasp. Drunk Mauve was a pain in the rear. It did not help that he could see her shoulders and they were bare, so unless she was wearing some strapless dress something was definitely wrong here.

"Go to sleep now, you won't feel good once the alcohol wears off." The words were barely out of his lips when her hands around his arm tightened as she clasped him to her chest.

"You don't want to?" She pouted. "Married couples do that all the time."

He brushed the hair from her face, "I wouldn't say we are a couple. Fine, if I join you, would you go to sleep?"

Mauve nodded her head vigorously and Jael swore. "Okay, let me go."

Mauve frowned, "You won't run away?"

Jael chuckled, "I am in charge of vampires in this region, the fact that you think this frightens me enough for me to run away is insulting. Scoot." Jael's voice was a bit unsteady toward the end of his words.

She slowly let go of his hand and adjusted enough to make room for him. Jael took his shirt off, his hands shook a little as he slipped it off his head. This was a bad idea, he said to himself as he lifted the sheets and climbed in beside her.

"Hi," she said and grinned at him. She then closed her eyes and was out like a lamp. Jael could immediately tell she was sleeping by the sound of her breathing. He could not comprehend how anybody could sleep so fast.

He should leave now, he knew. She was asleep, she wouldn't be able to stop him and if he left now he would be able to prevent a lot of things. Jael lay under the sheets staring intensely at her face.

It was nice to watch her sleep, he moved closer and planted a kiss on her lips. She rolled and turned her back to him. He buried his head on her shoulders as he felt his fangs engorge, her scent was overwhelming.

Vampires didn't smell. They smelt like the products in their hair, the soap they had used to shower, the food they had eaten, the clothes they were wearing, and where they had been but they didn't have their own smell.

He could smell Mauve, after taking out all the other external smells, he could pick out her scent. It was familiar. It smelt the same every time and like the smell of her arousal, it called to him every time.

Jael wrapped his arms around her as her back rested on his chest, her warmth was one thing he would never be able to get over. She felt soft all over and he could hear the steady beat of her heart, the blood pumping through her veins, and her soft breathing. He wasn't hungry but he knew he would gladly pierce through her neck in a heartbeat.

She suddenly adjusted, moving closer to him. Jael swore, this was torture. He could feel every inch of her. He should have left while he had the chance. It would take willpower to not take advantage of the situation but Jael knew that wouldn't be a problem, the fact that she would not be aware annoyed him to no end.

When he wanted to take her, he wanted her staring into his eyes with lust and squirming under him with a flushed face. It was no fun if she would forget all about it when she awoke.

Jael closed his eyes and tried to get some sleep. He still held her in his arms, he didn't want to let go, his excuse was that she felt warmer than his bed ever did which wasn't a lie but it wasn't the reason he didn't want to let go.

Jael felt himself drift to sleep and he rode the wave. He was asleep in mere minutes. This was the fastest he had fallen asleep in a while.
